Barcelona

Barcelona occupies a distinct position within the European art market. It is neither as commercially dominant as London or Paris, nor as institutionally conservative as some other Spanish cities. The result is a gallery ecosystem shaped by decades of Catalan cultural identity, careful programming, and a collector base that skews toward the discreet end of the spectrum. As Prats Nogueras Blanchard co-directors Rebeca Blanchard and Àlex Nogueras have observed, the city attracts European collectors from Switzerland, Germany, and France who own second homes in the city and show genuine interest in Catalan artists — a dynamic that distinguishes Barcelona from Madrid, which draws more heavily on Latin American collecting networks. This embedded, often quiet culture of collecting is something many of the city's best galleries have built their programmes around.

Barcelona's gallery geography is loosely divided between a central cluster — largely in the Eixample, along and around Passatge Mercader and Carrer Trafalgar — and a more peripheral concentration in the municipality of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat to the south-west. The central zone houses some of the most established names: Prats Nogueras Blanchard, ProjecteSD, àngels Barcelona, Bombon Projects, ADN Galeria, Zielinsky, and Mayoral. In L'Hospitalet one finds Galería Alegría, Ana Mas Projects, and ethall. Newer and more nomadic operations have also emerged, with several galleries taking flexible or pop-up approaches to the city's varied neighbourhoods.

The annual Barcelona Gallery Weekend, now in its twelfth edition, serves as a key structural event. The 2025 edition drew 24 galleries from Barcelona and L'Hospitalet and featured the work of more than 30 artists. The 12th edition is scheduled for 17–20 September 2026, with an open call for participating galleries issued at the start of the year. The event has increasingly built an acquisition programme alongside its exhibition function, resulting in documented institutional and private purchases tied directly to gallery shows.

Gallery Profiles

Galeria Mayoral

Founded in Barcelona in 1989, Mayoral has built one of the most coherent commercial positions in the Spanish secondary and primary market for post-war and Informalist art. The gallery's programme is anchored in the mid-20th-century masters of the Spanish avant-garde and Informalism: Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida, Manolo Millares, Antonio Saura, Fernando Zóbel, Rafael Canogar, Luis Feito, Juana Francés, and Pablo Palazuelo are all represented, alongside 20th-century figures of broader international standing such as Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso. Programming is the result of rigorous archival research conducted in collaboration with artists' foundations and estates.

In November 2019 Mayoral opened a second space at 36 Avenue Matignon in Paris — a strategic move that gave the gallery direct access to the French collecting market and placed it alongside other specialist secondary-market operations in one of Paris's most commercially active gallery districts. It participates in Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Basel Hong Kong, TEFAF Maastricht, Salon du Dessin, Art Paris, and ARCOmadrid, confirming its international standing.

In 2026, Mayoral opened the year with an exhibition running from 13 January to 14 March. At ARCOmadrid 2026, the gallery is presenting a dedicated artist project by JL Barquero. A new space devoted to emerging artists has also recently been added to the gallery's Barcelona operation, signalling an intentional expansion of its programming scope beyond the historical roster.

Prats Nogueras Blanchard

The gallery known as Prats Nogueras Blanchard came into being in March 2024 through the formal merger of two long-established Barcelona operations: Galeria Joan Prats, which had been active since 1976, and NoguerasBlanchard, which opened its first space in the Raval neighbourhood in 2004. The merger was presented as a means of building a more internationally competitive structure — one capable of operating with greater reach and resources without sacrificing the curatorial identity of either precursor.

Galeria Joan Prats was a pioneer of the contemporary gallery model in Spain, participating in Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, and ARCOmadrid, and representing artists including Albert Ràfols-Casamada, Carles Congost, Perejaume, Luis Gordillo, and Teresa Solar Abboud. NoguerasBlanchard was known for an interdisciplinary programme with a strong conceptual orientation, working long-term with artists including Wilfredo Prieto, Ludovica Carbotta, and Eva Fàbregas.

The merged gallery now operates from a new Barcelona space on Carrer Méndez Núñez and a Madrid space on Calle Beneficencia. At ARCOmadrid 2026, Prats Nogueras Blanchard is presenting a project focused on the artist Lucía C. Pino. The gallery was part of the 2025 Barcelona Gallery Weekend, where it staged an exhibition of unrealised projects by Christo and Jeanne-Claude titled The Architecture of the Unbuilt (18 September – 14 November 2025). The merger has also made visible the scale of the gallery's combined archive, including historical material by Joan Brossa, Rosa Tharrats, and Josep Royo, alongside contemporary commissions.

Galeria Senda

Galeria Senda was founded in 1991 by Carlos Durán and Chus Roig and has operated from its current address on Carrer Trafalgar since 2015. With a roster of around 26 artists — mixing long-term relationships with figures such as Peter Halley and Karin Kneffel alongside newer associations — the gallery has cultivated an explicitly eclectic approach, deliberately resisting the kind of single-strand programming that characterises some of its peers.

The gallery's represented artists span a wide formal and generational range. Alongside Halley and Kneffel, current and recent artists include Jaume Plensa (who received the Gold Medal for Cultural Merit from the City of Barcelona), Robert Mapplethorpe, Gino Rubert, Sandra Vásquez de la Horra, Roger Ballen, Anna Malagrida, and Miralda. Senda is closely connected to the LOOP Festival, the Barcelona-based international video art fair, and has been an active participant in the ART MEETS APOLO programme, placing site-specific installations in the common spaces of the Sala Apolo concert venue in collaboration with LAB 36.

The gallery's most recent exhibition documented before this writing was Desplazamientos (27 November 2025 – 18 January 2026), a collaborative project by Anna Malagrida and Mathieu Pernot investigating the historical impact of human activity on Mediterranean biodiversity. Prior to that, PRELUDIO by street artist Aryz (Octavi Arrizabalaga) ran from 18 September to 22 November 2025, presenting large-format oil paintings in dialogue with classical painting tradition. At ARCOmadrid 2026, the gallery is presenting a project focused on Antoni Miralda.

ProjecteSD

ProjecteSD was founded in 2003 by Silvia Dauder and is housed at Passatge Mercader, 8. It is one of the most consistently regarded galleries in Barcelona for the depth and coherence of its conceptual programme, and it received the Arte y Mecenazgo award from La Caixa in 2014 for best gallery. The gallery has a particular commitment to artists' books and publications, hosting a permanent section of selected editions and having served since 2004 as the first Spanish distributor of Roma Publications.

Its artist roster includes Iñaki Bonillas, Patricia Dauder, Koenraad Dedobbeleer, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Dora García, Ana Jotta, Guillaume Leblon, and Raimond Chaves, among others. The programme is oriented towards a dialogue between emerging voices and more established international figures, with an emphasis on conceptual and process-driven practices. ProjecteSD participates in Art Basel, Paris + by Art Basel, and ARCOmadrid.

Several 2026 activities are already confirmed. The gallery is participating in ARCOmadrid 2026 (Pabellón 9, Stand C18). In terms of ongoing institutional placement: Eurostars Hotel Company has added LUCE's Flamencos Delta del Ebro (2025) to its collection from the exhibition Searching Where There Is Nothing at ProjecteSD. Fundació Sorigué has also incorporated LUCE's Toldo masías (2025) from the same show. The gallery's institutional reach extends to MACBA, where a connected group exhibition runs from 28 November 2025 to 28 September 2026.

Bombon Projects

Bombon Projects opened in February 2017, preceded from 2012 to 2017 by a project-space called Pasaje Studio. Co-directed by Bernat Daviu and Joana Rueda, the gallery operates with a programme that explicitly positions itself between the commercial gallery model and a more open platform for contemporary artistic exchange. It has a particular interest in practices that carry social, political, and emotional charge, and has combined solo exhibitions with historical reclamations — most notably the 2025 presentation of the medium and visionary artist Josefa Tolrà alongside Eva Fàbregas.

The gallery now also has a space in Madrid. Its recent activities include a 2025 Christmas selection of special available works and the presentation of a new edition by Enric Farrés Duran in November 2025. Agnes Essonti opened a solo exhibition at the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Madrid in February 2026, running until 24 May 2026. Josep Maynou's solo show Punto Dulce opened at the gallery's Madrid space in January 2026. Jordi Mitjà's exhibition at Taca Studio opened on 16 January 2026, curated by Angels Miralda.

The gallery's connection to institutional acquisitions has been well documented. The Colección Manuel Expósito acquired Exudate #72 by Eva Fàbregas from the exhibition SWELL at Bombon Projects. The Fundació Sorigué acquired Tarrt (2024) by Lara Fluxà from the exhibition Firefly at Bombon Projects. The gallery will again participate in ARCOmadrid 2026.

As part of the Barcelona Gallery Weekend Acquisitions Programme, Fundació Ùniques acquired part of the series Secrets (2025) by Laura Llaneli from ADN Galeria.

The gallery's 2025 exhibition Of Flesh and Ether: Picasso, Miró and Tàpies resulted in a notable acquisition: Manuel Expósito acquired the work After Joan Miró. El sol abrazando (2024) by Julio Anaya. ADN Galeria participates in ARCOmadrid 2026 as part of the general programme.

Chiquita Room

Chiquita Room operates as a hybrid structure — functioning simultaneously as a gallery, an artist residency, a cultural mediator, a project producer, a publisher of artist books, and an educational platform. Located in the Sant Antoni district, it is one of the more programmatically ambitious spaces in the city, and its exhibition programme often involves historical-contemporary dialogues of the kind that broader institutional museums pursue.

For ARCOmadrid 2026, Chiquita Room is presenting a project on the theme of duality, pairing historical works by Dutch artist Pieter Laurens Mol with new works by Barcelona-based Teresa Estapé. The gallery participated in the 2025 Barcelona Gallery Weekend with an exhibition pairing Bruno Munari and Mari Chordà.
